Named after Joachim Machado, the Portuguese engineer who surveyed the area for the proposal Pretoria-Delagoa Bay railway line in the 1890’s. After the fall of Pretoria (Anglo Boer War 1899 – 1902) the town became the seat of the Transvaal government (5 June to 25 August 1900), which led to heavy shelling from the British under command of Sir Redvers Bullers.
