Our lovely lodge is set Only 8 kms from the Croc Bridge Gate. 5 Kms from the Mozambique border and 65 kms from the Swaziland border, so all of these locations are possible for self drive or guided day visits. The lodge is set in tropical gardens around a pool. We have a licensed bar and restaurant and a lovely communal TV/guest lounge. All rooms are en suite and have air con and mini bars and tea/coffee ,making facilities. Golf, fishing, horse riding, elephant back and microlight safaris are all available locally too! There are a million reasons to stay here!

The Crocodile River forms the southern boundary of the World renowned Kruger National Park. We lie just one km from the KNP fence and a mere ten minutes drive to Crocodile Bridge Gate. Even closer is the Lebombo border post for crossings into sun-kissed Mozambique. Both the Mananga and Jeppe’s Reef borders with the Kingdom of Swaziland are just an hour away. On top of these obvious attractions, Mpumalanga’s Wild Frontier is rich in available activities from good restaurants to micro-light flights, elephant back safaris to quad biking – the choice is yours. We are an intimate eight room, owner run guest house and we pride our-selves on the warmth of our welcome and personal touch with our guests. Our breakfasts are outstanding and we serve excellent evening meals by arrangement. Our ‘honesty’ bar is a relaxing way to while away an evening. We are always happy to provide advice or ongoing travel arrangements.

 Accommodation

Komatipoort is one of the warmest towns in South Africa – with this in mind, all of our guest rooms enjoy air-conditioning and six of the eight are under cooling thatch. All of our rooms have stocked mini-bar fridges and private entrances. We have room formats to satisfy most requirements:  

Rooms 1 and 2 are double rooms under thatch with en-suite shower rooms and covered stoep areas. 
Room 3 is a family room with a double and single bed with a shower over bath,
Room 4 is a popular family room sleeping up to six people in a, double bed, two singles and full sized bunk beds and serviced by an en-suite shower room.
Room 5 is a double bedroom enjoying a beautiful pool outlook and en-suite shower room.
Room 6 is a twin with pool outlook and a hand held shower over bath,
Room 7 has a beautiful four-poster bed and indulgent slipper bath in the en-suite bathroom. For those with friends or family in tow there is an adjacent bunk bed room to sleep two.
Room 8 also enjoys a four-poster bed with a single bed sofa and has a luxurious slipper bath and separate shower.

Most of our rooms are laid out around the sparkling pool which provides a centrepiece to the Trees Too oasis. Our tropical gardens are dominated by more than twenty beautiful royal palm trees which rustle coolingly in the Summer breezes.

Trees Too, and the Lowveld generally, are best enjoyed out of doors: for this reason we have  not cluttered our bedrooms with televisions. There is however a comfortable, communal TV lounge with DSTV for the sports, news or soapie addicts, along with magazines and a small library in several languages and a variety of games.

Guests should note that we employ a no-smoking policy in all of our rooms.
Security is not a big issue in the quiet village of Komatipoort, but our spacious car park is secured by an automated gate and has ample room for boats, trailers and the like. The perimeter of Trees Too is protected by a state of the art security system.

Food and Drink

Trees Too is fully licensed and as our honesty bar lacks any form of door, it is open whenever you want to use it.

To set you up for the day ahead, our sumptuous breakfasts consist of a cold buffet of fruits, cereals, cheeses, juices, cold meats, yogurts and toast followed by eggs, bacon, sausage, tomato, beans and mushrooms, cooked to order. All this comes with as much tea and coffee as you can drink, so you shouldn’t leave us hungry. Substantial picnic breakfasts are available for those making an early start.

We provide evening meals by prior arrangement and produce an eclectic range of cuisine from Impala Curry and Kudu Stew to Fillet Steak and Bobotie. As former vegetarians we are adept at catering for non-meat-eaters – but who wants to be bottom of the food chain in Africa?

We stock a selection of decent South African wines to complement our food or simply to enjoy by the pool.

If, unthinkably, you tire of our cooking or, quite possibly, we are having a night away from the stove then Komatipoort abounds with decent places to eat varying from a five minute walk to a fifteen minute drive away. For sizeable parties we are happy to produce one of our highly regarded braais by arrangement.

Please note, however that Trees Too is not a self catering facility.

Kruger National Park

You don’t really need another reason to stay with us than as part of your experience of the justly World renowned Kruger National Park.

Long established and ultimately accessible you can drive yourself easily through this fantastic African wilderness. Imagine setting off at dawn’s early light armed with your picnic breakfast. You could be just ten minutes away from your first lion of the day…

But better still, kick the ‘Big 5’ mentality and enjoy whatever you see. You will always see something in the Kruger if you take the time to look and you will be a richer person for it.

Game Drives/Walks

Whilst part of the beauty of the Kruger Park is its simple accessibility to anyone in a self-driven vehicle, there are many aspects of this fascinating wilderness that can only be explored in the company of an experienced guide. Bush walks (usually early in the morning) allow a more intimate involvement with the landscape and a chance to focus on those smaller aspects of Nature that would go unseen from a car. Sunset Drives start just as the Park is closing and powerful searchlights give participants a taste of the nocturnal life of the bush. Morning, Afternoon or Full-Day Drives can be arranged with a variety of providers, giving the passengers the benefit of an expert guide and means that nobody in your party has to drive all day.

Micro-light Safaris

For the intrepid traveller, what better way to marvel at the unspoilt landscape of the Lowveld than from the air. We have a relationship with a provider of ‘Micro-Light Safaris’ who offer a range of flight options along the course of the Crocodile River (the southern boundary of the Kruger National Park) and/or over their own ‘Big 5’ reserve. As with all wildlife watching experiences, nobody can guarantee what you may or may not see: but the view will be spectacular an the experience unforgettable. Flight durations vary between 7 ½ and 60 minutes and are of course subject to availability.

Elephant Back Safaris

The African Savannah Elephant (Loxodonta africana) is one of the most charismatic animals in the World – as well as being the largest land mammal. An encounter with a family herd or old bull with his attendant ‘askaris’ is a highlight of any day spent in the African bush. The interactions of these enormous, gentle and highly complex creatures can be fascinating and even moving. We have a relationship with a local safari camp that can allow you to be part of the interaction. Their four carefully trained elephants can be ridden and engaged with in their stables. An unforgettable highlight of your visit to South Africa.

Birding

The Kruger Park is a birder’s paradise with over 500 species recorded across its various eco-systems. So far our garden at Trees Too has only provided sightings of 60 or so species – but we keep watching…

For the truly ardent birder we have associations with expert guides who can be chartered to lead parties or individuals through the park.

Even the best guide book, like Newman or Roberts, is no substitute for local expertise and well over 100 species can be spotted in a single day out. We need plenty of notice to organise such trips which are subject to availability and priced from R1500 for a full day.

Mozambique

Mozambique is the rediscovered jewel of a country that links southern and eastern Africa. The end, after nearly 20 years, of wars of liberation and Cold War sponsored civil conflict has given this friendly, beautiful country a decade in which to rebuild some of its former glory as a spectacular Indian Ocean holiday destination.

With enough notice and subject to availability we can arrange a day trip to the capital city Maputo, just 90km away. The history is fascinating, and you will marvel at the contrasts, the liveliness of the fish and craft markets and enjoy a sumptuous meal overlooking the Indian Ocean. Prices from around R1000 per person plus required visa. Lunch cost not included.

Day on the beach

Take a guided tour to a little Mozambican town of Marracuene 35 kms north of Maputo where you board a boat to cross the Incomati River which flows into the Indian Ocean and travel for about 20 min to the beach of Macanetta.You will pass 2 island in the river, maybe see lesser flamingos and local fisherman in their colourful Dhows on their way to the ocean or fishing for fresh water crabs. Enjoy a couple of Hours on the clean white beach and the azure waters of the warm Indian Ocean where swimming conditions are excellent and enjoy a traditional Mozambican meal at the small restaurant on the beach where you can also sample traditional prawn cakes and a cold local beer.

Swaziland

The tiny land-locked kingdom of Swaziland nestles between the South African provinces of Mpumalanga and Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Republic of Mozambique. What Swaziland lacks in size it more than makes up for in the friendliness of its people, beauty of its often mountainous landscapes and range of available activities. Crossing into Swaziland is easy at either the Mananga or Jeppe’s Reef border posts and few visitors to South Africa will require any form of visa. A beautiful day out from Trees Too could involve calling at the renowned Matsamo Cultural village to experience traditional Swazi culture and witness a fabulous display of singing and traditional dancing – but beware you may be called upon to be part of the show…

From there a drive through the spectacular wooded hills and mountains of northern Swaziland taking in highlights such as Phophonyane Falls, the gold-mining town of Piggs Peak, the justly famous Ngwenya glass factory and the capital city of Mbabane.

We will happily advise on routes through Swaziland or help with accommodation advice.

Local Tours

For a completely different day out, Komatipoort based company Eyes of Nkomazi runs a variety of local tours.
A trip around points of interest in the town of Komatipoort itself takes in: remnants of the old Selati Railway line which gave the town its reason for being; huge (now disused) bat hotels to encourage these mosquito eating creatures and an historic cemetery of ‘pioneers’ graves.

A trip to the local township will usually encompass the touching Samora Machel memorial perched on a hill-top where Swaziland, South Africa and Swaziland meet. In the township of Nass itself, there is a chance to meet with a traditional healer or sangoma, witness unaffected dancing by local children and most importantly gain some understanding of how ordinary Africans live life.

A trip to the Komati sugar mill is a fascinating industrial tour of how this vital product is refined and produced on a grand scale – something just a little bit different. Ask about prices and availability.

Golf

The Wild Frontier of South Africa is truly a Mecca for enthusiastic golfers. Komatipoort itself boasts the beautiful Kambaku golf club which overlooks the Kruger National Park and promises interesting encounters on the fairways.

Kambaku is considered to be one of the best nine hole golf courses in the whole of South Africa and the club is always happy to show it off to visiting players. Prices for a round of golf start at R110.00.

For those golfers truly wishing to play in the footsteps of legends we have through association with Kambaku, a list of members of the World-renowned Leopard Creek golf club in nearby Malelane who are willing to host visiting players at a fraction of the cost that this top-class course would usually demand.

The more notice you give us, the more likely we are to be able to make the necessary arrangements.

Quad Biking

For the adventurous and adrenaline junkies, a local provider offers fantastic quad biking trails amid wooded hills about 40 minutes drive away. Prices from R220.00

Fishing

The Komati River is justly famous for its tigerfish. We can arrange half or full days out on the river, from bank or punt, with an experienced guide. All fishing tackle is provided by the supplier and a truly memorable day out is guaranteed whether the ‘big one’ bites or not. Prices from R350.00

Hiking

The wealth of things to see and do and the vast distances of South Africa mean that most travellers will spend a lot of time in their cars. An antidote to that can be the hiking trails in the wooded hills of the Letubi Valley just 40 minutes drive away.

Riding

For those of an equestrian disposition Komatipoort offers one to three hour riding trails accompanied by and experienced rider. Costs from R90.00 per hour

Chimpanzee Eden (Jane Goodall Institute)

Drive your self just 1 hour from here to this chimpanzee rescue centre and join a tour at 1000, 1200 or 1400 (feeding times are 1000 and 1400) to find out about the plight of the chimpanzee, the personal history of the individual animals and projects of the JGI. Entrance fee R100 for adults and R35 for kids. Trips with a driver/guide can be arranged.
