Chrissiesmeer Songimvelo Nature Reserve Badplaas Aventura Resort Ebutsini 4x4 Route Swaziland Borderpost Barberton History: Badplaas, meaning 'Bath Farm' in Afrikaans, is at the foot of the Hlumuhlumu Mountains (place of much thunder). The town is best known for the hot sulphur spring which bubbles to the surface at a temperature of 53°C and at a rate of 30,000 litres per hour. The Swazi tribesmen used the water from the spring for medicinal purposes, referring to it as 'Emanzana', the healing waters. The site of the spring was, by all accounts, given to a hunter by the name of Jacob de Clerq by the paramount chief of the Swazi. De Clerq built a trading store nearby and advertised the curative properties of the spring. The area was soon festooned with tents during the winter months, especially after gold was discovered in the Barberton area. In November 1893 the spa was declared state property by the Transvaal Government. The spring was diverted into a reservoir and the water was pumped from here into a series of baths.
